Arresting Evidence Uncovered During Routine Traffic Stop
Nine individuals have been arrested in connection with a brazen gold heist at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but police have only recovered a fraction of the 20 million worth of stolen goods.
Peel Regional Police revealed that the heist occurred on Monday when a high-value container was stolen from a cargo facility after being offloaded from a plane that had just landed.
"Had we not pulled over that vehicle during the traffic stop, we would not have uncovered the evidence needed to find the culprits in the gold heist," said Detective Sergeant Jason Dingee.
The stolen goods included 6,600 gold bars valued at over 20 million, along with 2 million in cash.
Police are expected to release more details about the arrests and the ongoing investigation at a press conference later today.
The 2023 heist made international headlines, with the stolen gold bars weighing a total of 40,019 kilograms.
"The shock Toronto airport heist of 20 million in gold bars weighing 40,019 kilograms along with US$2 million in cash was as easy as walking into Air Canada's cargo facility showing a fraudulent invoice," said an anonymous source.
The arrests and partial recovery of the stolen goods represent a major breakthrough in the investigation.
